“Without the College of Arts and Sciences Student Assistance Fund I would not have been able to finish my undergraduate career.”

“My ultimate goal is to teach Chemistry in an urban school setting,” says Jarrett Coppin.  An undergraduate chemistry major, he came to the University at Buffalo from Brooklyn, with plans of pursuing graduate school and a teaching certification after earning a bachelor’s degree.

As a scholar in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, which prepares undergraduate students (from underrepresented groups) for doctoral studies, Jarrett embraced opportunities to enrich his studies.  He interned at Bennett High School (an inner-city public school in Buffalo), which allowed him to work first-hand with high school students, setting up labs, preparing them for the Regents Examinations, and  providing guidance for seniors.  “I see a lot of potential in some of the students,” he says.  “Some have already applied for college, or say they are going to, but have reservations about living away from home. I try to explain my experience to them and give them insight to the atmosphere at UB. As a future educator, I know that caring about all facets of students’ lives and offering them support if they need it is key to their success.”

A dedicated student, Jarrett participated in the SUNY Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Summer Research Internship Program, UB’s Celebration of Academic Excellence, and served as an Activities Coordinator for the UB Caribbean Student Association, among many other activities.  With one semester left to graduate, Jarrett found himself faced with serious financial problems.  Needing only seven credits to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, Jarrett was informed that he was ineligible to receive New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP).  Determined to earn his degree but with no family resources to help him, Jarrett turned to the College of Arts and Sciences Student Assistance Fund, which provides critical financial support for undergraduate students in difficult situations such as his, and was soon awarded funding.  Jarrett was conferred his degree in February, and will proudly don a cap and gown to receive his diploma this May.

He is deeply grateful for the support he received.  “I’d like to express my appreciation and offer thanks,” he says.  “Without the College of Arts and Sciences Student Assistance Fund I would not have been able to finish my undergraduate career.”
