History of Arts & Sciences at UB

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Buffalo was founded in 1918 by Dr. Julian Park with the support of Buffalo community leader Seymour Knox, and many other generous benefactors.  Since then, the College of Arts and Sciences has educated a wide range of talented, ambitious, and hard-working students.

In 1962, University of Buffalo became a member of the State University of New York.  For many years, separate faculties awarded the undergraduate degrees:

  • Arts and Letters
  • Social Sciences
  • Natural Sciences and Mathematics

In 1998, these faculty units were subsumed under the formal umbrella of the University at Buffalo College of Arts and Sciences to facilitate collaboration and to promote cross-disciplinary study and research.  Therefore alumni holding degrees earned prior to 1998 are alumni of the UB College of Arts and Sciences.
